I have worked as a cartographer and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) consultant since 2014.  While I have the technical skills to take on a wide variety of commissions and projects, I specialize in the intersection of scholarship, education, and mapmaking.  Drawing on my background as a researcher and teacher, I help professionals in the social sciences and humanities to collect and analyze spatial data, to illustrate complex geographic arguments in clear and accessible formats, and to share their work with students and colleagues around the world.

After my undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan, I attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina, earning my Ph.D. in history in 2020.  While my research and teaching focused on the Roman Empire and the ancient Mediterranean world, I became fascinated with the potential of digital GIS technologies to enhance scholarship and pedagogy.  While at UNC, I served as Director of the Ancient World Mapping Center, a leading historical GIS research organization.  I also helped found UNC’s Digital History Lab, consulting with faculty and students to support innovative teaching and scholarship using digital tools.

Both during and after graduate school, I have worked with dozens of clients and colleagues on a wide range of mapping initiatives.  Among other projects, I currently serve as a consultant and cartographer for the German Historical Society, as a GIS specialist for Clear Bible Inc., and as an Associate Editor for the NEH-funded Pleiades Gazetteer.

I have commissioned maps from Gabe for two separate publication projects. Gabe was fantastic to work with, and finished the projects in prompt, timely fashion, at very reasonable rates. He worked with me carefully through each revision, to ensure that the results were exactly what I needed. I would recommend him unequivocally for any scholarly mapping project you might have. Thanks, Gabe!

Gabe’s maps clearly and concisely translate words into an appealing visual format. They helped me see patterns in the data that I wouldn't have noticed from the text alone.

Gabe Moss produced outstanding and invaluable maps for my doctoral dissertation in History. He worked patiently and collaboratively with me as I encountered new information on my topic and fine-tuned details about what I needed from the maps. The maps that Gabe produced reflect his patience and attention to detail, and illustrate numerous places that no longer appear on standard maps of the region. I recommend his work to anyone in need of customized maps, historical or otherwise!

Gabe not only produced beautiful maps for my dissertation, but also provided expert guidance on the type of map that would best showcase my argument. He is both a skilled cartographer and a valuable collaborator on GIS projects.
